Attendance

Showing up each day gives students more opportunities to learn, build relationships, and prepare for their future.

Students are considered chronically absent when they miss 10 percent or more of the school days they are enrolled to attend, that's about 18 days in a traditional school year, for any reason, including excused absences.

Regular attendance helps students:

• Stay engaged in classroom learning.
• Build meaningful relationships with classmates and trusted adults.
• Develop positive routines and confidence.
• Participate in activities, discussions, and experiences that support academic and personal growth.

Research consistently shows that students who attend school regularly are more likely to stay on track academically and graduate prepared for college, careers, and life. Every school day helps build the knowledge, relationships, and confidence students need to succeed.

One Day Matters promotes positive attendance habits by encouraging partnerships between families, schools, and the community to help every student succeed. The initiative recognizes that attendance challenges are often complex and focuses on connecting students and families with support whenever possible.

We understand that regular attendance isn't always easy. Illness, transportation, housing, family responsibilities, and other unexpected challenges can all affect a student's ability to attend school.

When attendance becomes difficult, schools want to work alongside families to identify solutions and connect students with available support.

Helping students attend school is a shared effort, and no family should feel like they have to face attendance challenges alone.
