Assistant Superintendent

Lake County, Calif. (December 21, 2020) We are pleased to announce that after an extensive recruitment process, the Lake County Office of Education has hired Denise Shannon as the Assistant Superintendent, Fiscal Services.

As the Assistant Superintendent, Fiscal Services Shannon will lead the LCOE fiscal department and provide guidance and direction for all Lake County School Districts.

Shannon brings in over 30 years of experience using accounting software such as QuickBooks.

Shannon has worked with the Lake County Office of Education for two years. Her most recent position being the Director of Business Services. Before her time here she worked in Fiscal Services at the Lakeport Unified School District.

“I believe that my career as a business owner prepared me for my current role. My frame of reference is to look at school finance from the lens of an owner,” Shannon said.

Shannon applied for this position to continue pushing the overall success of the organization. She plans to be detail oriented and bring a wide variety of experiences to the table from past positions she has held.

Having a team philosophy and making sure the fiscal team continues to be a part of the strategic planning process is one of Shannon’s goals in the new position. The knowledge and understanding of the plan behind the numbers helps keep the team on track she said.

“The overall goal is for the fiscal team to be able to accomplish its goals and objectives while maintaining strict fiscal compliance under the ever-changing laws that govern education in California,” Shannon said.

Shannon is taking over the position of Michelle Buell, who has been with the Office of Education for 26 years.

Buell has served under five different Superintendents and nine dedicated Board of Education Members.

After retirement, Buell plans on spending more time with her grandchildren and pick up many new hobbies.

"I am honored to have worked with this agency and to have been part of so much care, dedication, and service to the children of our County. I will miss my team. They are amazing,” Buell said. “I wish Denise well, she is already an integral part of our team and I'm sure she will do great things!”

The recruitment for this position was facilitated by the School Services of California Inc. This organization put together information to make sure the best candidate was chosen for this position.

The position was open for applications starting on October 23rd, 2020 – December 7, 2020.  The School Services of California Inc. held the first round on interviews via Zoom on December 11, 2020. The second round was held on December 16, 2020.
