ULHS Aca Deca Champs 2020

Upper Lake High School’s Academic Decathlon team will represent Lake County as it advances to California’s Academic Decathlon competition 2020 in Sacramento.

The 2019-20 theme is, “In Sickness and in Health: An Exploration of Illness and Wellness.”

Students compete in three categories:

  1. Varsity: 2.99 grade point average and below
  2. Scholastic: 3.0 to 3.74 GPA
  3. Honor: 3.75 to 4.0 GPA

The Upper Lake State Team includes:

  • Varsity: William Cromwell, Jisel Horne and Sierra Manley
  • Scholastic: Atlantis Jones, Georgia Schmit and Annalise Smith
  • Honors: Deeya Kalan, Nobalie Snow and Maria Tinoco

This year, Upper Lake was invited to participate in the North Bay Region Academic Decathlon, sponsored by the Solano County Office of Education.

More than 225 students from 15 high schools across Lake, Mendocino, Napa, Solano, Sonoma and Yolo counties participated in the event.

Upper Lake High took online tests in academic subjects as part of the regional competition on Saturday, Jan. 25, before the February 1 competition at Solano Community College in Fairfield. There, students competed in speech, interview and the Super Quiz.

Upper Lake High placed sixth out of 15 teams, and earned the honor of representing Lake County at the State meet.

Several Upper Lake Team Members won individual medals. They include:

Nobalie Snow - Gold in Scholastic Essay (perfect score), Silver Scholastic Freshman Overall Varsity

Jasmine Haro - Bronze in the Varsity Essay

Atlantis Jones - Gold in Scholastic Interview, Bronze in Scholastic Sophomore Overall Achievement

Sierra Manley - Silver in Scholastic Interview

Deeya Kalan - Gold in Honor Speech (perfect score)

Annalise Smith - Bronze in Scholastic Sophomore Overall Achievement

Sierra Manley - Gold Varsity Sophomore Overall

Georgia Schmit - Gold Scholastic Freshman Overall Achievement

The Upper Lake Decathletes are preparing for the state competition, which takes place March 26 to 29, 2020 in Sacramento.

The Lake County Friends of Mendocino College has approved $500 for travel expenses to support Upper Lake’s trip to the state competition.

Anna Sablone once again coached the winning Upper Lake Team.
