Kerry Smith

  • Lake County Teacher of the Year 2019 - 2020

Resource Teacher | Mountain Vista Middle School | Kelseyville Unified School District

Positive, funny, kind, exciting, friendly, and helpful are all words that students use to describe Ms. Kerry Smith, Kelseyville Unified School District’s Teacher of the Year. Kerry is outstanding in many ways. She has the instructional skills required to be a highly effective teacher, but also holds those intangible qualities that are the heart of a successful educator.

What makes Kerry stand out above all others is her innate ability to connect to middle school students. She is kind, compassionate, caring, and advocates for her students on a daily basis.

Kerry values relationships and works hard to develop meaningful relationships with students, staff and families. It is clear that Kerry cares deeply about her students, and works to get to know each of her students and families personally, striving to use the relationships she’s built to help students become motivated and successful.

Kerry Smith has had a dramatic and lasting impact on the students in her resource program. She focuses on developing a growth mindset for students, encouraging them to work hard and persevere through any and all challenges.

Kerry Smith is a natural teacher leader. She is highly respected by her peers, and is often someone we rely on to support our new teachers. Kerry has mentored many new educators throughout her career and continues to inspire others daily with her positive attitude and professionalism with staff, students, and parents. Teachers from across our district and the county have come to observe Kerry in action and they always leave impressed.

Kerry is very approachable. Students, staff, and parents feel comfortable coming to her for assistance, advice, or feedback because they value her opinion and they know that she genuinely cares.

Kerry is the model of a lifelong learner. She is constantly striving to improve her own professional practice and is always willing to try new approaches in her classroom.

Kerry is eager to support new initiative and most recently agreed to be a part of our school-wide Leadership Team as we move to implement Professional Learning Communities. I can’t think of any other teacher who exemplifies the profession of teaching better than Kerry Smith.
