Medical Assistant (MA) Program

  • The Lake County Office of Education offers a nine-month Medical Assistant program. This course prepares and qualifies the students for certification in the full scope of practice as a Medical Assistant.

To prepare for certification status, experience is required, therefore externships are arranged with local doctors' offices or clinics (January through May).

Duties include answering telephones, greeting patients, updating and filing patients' medical records, completing insurance forms, handling correspondence, scheduling appointments, arranging hospital admissions and lab service, and performing billing and bookkeeping.

An MA also collects and/or prepares lab specimens, sterilizes medical instruments, prepares and administers medications as directed, authorizes drug refills, telephones prescriptions to a pharmacy, draws blood, prepares patients for x-rays, takes electrocardiograms, removes sutures and changes dressing.

The program will accept up to 24 applicants. Upon acceptance, students will be given further instructions for drug screening, fingerprinting and submission of course fees.
