Child Find

The Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act (IDEA) and California Education Code mandate local educational agencies (LEAs) to identify and evaluate students with known or suspected disabilities to assess their need for special education services. This includes all IDEA-eligible students, such as homeless individuals or wards of the state. The process used by LEAs to locate and identify these students is called Child Find.

Child Find is each LEA/district's responsibility and takes place before a special education referral. Its purpose is to locate potential special education candidates from birth to 21 years old, including those not in public schools.
