Evelyn Norton

When Taylor Observatory first opened in 1980, Evelyn Norton served as Robert Taylor’s assistant. When Mr. Taylor left in the late 1980’s, Evelyn assumed responsibility for the observatory. For the next 18 years, she thrilled thousands of people with her planetarium shows and telescope observing sessions. She also taught astronomy in the observatory classroom. Her knowledge of astronomy was exceptional. What is remarkable is that Evelyn’s astronomical contributions to the Observatory and the community occurred at a time in her life when many people retire to their homes and cease much of their former activity.

Evelyn passed away on January 25, 2005 at the age of 81. She taught school for over 60 years. Her greatest contribution was her support of Taylor Observatory. In recognition of the value her work gave to the community, the Planetarium was dedicated in her name - Norton Planetarium.
